Media coverage, reviews and interviews · 2009–present
Julian Perez has been featured in Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Mixmag, DJ Mag ES, Trommel Music, MEOKO, Ibiza Voice, Vicious Magazine, Pulse Radio, Buenos Aliens, and dozens more publications across Europe, Asia, North America and South America since 2009. Coverage spans album reviews, artist profiles, label features, festival appearances and interviews. His debut album Solemnity (2016) and second album Break-Even (2021) received wide critical attention. His labels Fathers & Sons Productions and Girada Unlimited have been covered as significant contributions to the underground vinyl scene. In 2026 he published his debut book, INTERFASE: The Infinite Set.
"The way I see everything is changing. I feel like I'm on another level when I make music, when I DJ, it feels different. More confident."
"I consider myself independent. I don't really belong to another brand. I am my own brand."
"I could release all the stuff with my own label but I also like to share with other people, with other labels. The good thing about doing it the way I do, is that I do what I want. I release when I want and nobody can tell me anything, it's freedom."
"You have to take care of yourself. I feel like self-discipline is a very important part of my job."
"The key childhood memory was when I was listening to electronic music at eight or nine years old back in 1991. My friends and I were waiting for our older friends, cousins, brothers and sisters to come back from the clubs every weekend. They were bringing us tapes recorded on the night."
"I'd just describe it as my sound. It's an extensive mix of influences I have from over the years. That's why I do tracks from deep house to dub techno. In my mixes I can't be focused in one particular style, the development of every set always goes in a different direction."
"A master of emotive, functional dance music, the distinct sound of Spanish wizard Julian Perez is heard in an instant."
"Solemnity communicates Perez's signature sound and showcases his more experimental side through a track list that represents total musical expression. Although this marks the end of an era for Fathers and Sons, it does in fact act as a reminder of Perez's deep-rooted talent and how much more the Spanish producer has to give."
"After the ending of Perez's much loved label Fathers & Sons Productions, one of the most influential labels of the past decade, it is great to see the Spanish artist begin a fresh and inspiring new project."
"My conclusion is that we are in a good era for quality electronic music. The coming tendency is a perfect combination between Deep Sounds, Funky House, Tech House and Minimal Techno — these sounds can be played in parties like Circoloco or Monza, everything at a speed of around 126 beats per minute."

"I Need That Moment to Unplug Myself to The Music"
MEOKO interviewed Julian Perez as his Cocoon Recordings release landed. He described his sound as "an extensive mix of influences from over the years" spanning deep house to dub techno. He spoke in depth about the Fuse movement ("That's a real movement — these guys are able to do a party with their residents and get the same good vibe as when they invite guests"), his studio work with artists from the Drumma Records label, and named Robert Johnson in Frankfurt as his highlight of that year — "my idea of a club. The sound, the booth, the perfect size."

Cards On The Tables: Julian Perez
Ben Raven interviewed Julian Perez for Ibiza Voice's series on what it's really like to be a DJ. The article covered his vinyl-first approach to record selection, how he prepares for gigs without pre-planning sets, and his favourite record shops worldwide: Technique in Tokyo, Gramaphone Records in Chicago, Subwax BCN in Barcelona, GOSU in Frankfurt, Disk Union Shibuya in Tokyo, Rush Hour in Amsterdam, Palma39 in Madrid, The Thing in Brooklyn, A-1 Record Shop in New York and The Ghost in Berlin. He described how he curates his record bag before touring and his approach to managing the mental challenges of a touring DJ career.
"I'd say I get more than 70% of my records on Discogs. It's more expensive this way but it's hard to find the stuff I'm looking for by checking only new records. Plus, to seek and find un-hyped gems, Discogs is the place." — Julian Perez

MEOKO Exclusive: The Face Behind Girada Unlimited — Julian Perez
MEOKO revealed that Julian Perez was the mind behind the mysterious Girada Unlimited label, whose debut release Girada Max EP had sold out before the day of release, leaving copies "like gold dust for crate diggers." Writer Zac More described Fathers & Sons as "one of the most influential labels of the past decade" and Girada Unlimited as a new project where anonymous artist credits allow "the listener to gain full focus in the heart of the sound, without any influences, no limits, and no boundaries." The concept behind the unknown artist releases was to let listeners "create their own interpretation" through imagination alone.

Julian Perez: From Advertising Work in Office to DJing All Over the World
An extended portrait interview conducted in Rimini. Julian Perez spoke about his career path: leaving his advertising and graphic design job in Alicante around 2005, moving to Ibiza with no plan, beginning to play after parties and villa parties to prove himself, and spending winters in the studio learning from YouTube tutorials and friends. He described the 2010–2012 period as tough — "I had to do several jobs to survive" — before his career turned in 2013. He gave detailed advice for aspiring DJs and producers on authenticity, hard work, and avoiding the "fake it till you make it" mentality widespread in the industry.
"I decided I wanted to do it, and make productions that I could be proud of. In 2010 I made my first releases, and I do not know how in the years to come, at some point the wheel started to turn in the right direction." — Julian Perez

Rhythmatic Talks to Julian Perez
A detailed Q&A on the occasion of the first anniversary showcase of Fathers & Sons Productions. Perez spoke extensively about his studio setup (Jomox 999, MFB-522, Tempest drum machines, Ableton Live, Logic, 24-channel analog mixer), his approach to making tracks ("my best tracks can be done in one evening or in a whole day — when a track takes too much time it isn't usually one of my favourites"), and his background. He revealed his early influences: growing up listening to Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Queen and Pink Floyd via a cousin, before discovering dance and techno in the early 1990s. He also addressed the vinyl vs sync debate: "For me the most important thing when I'm playing is having fun. I could play the same music with a laptop and sync but I'd get bored after dropping the first track."
"I grew up living with a cousin who was like my big brother; he was listening to Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Queen, Pink Floyd all day long. My parents still don't get why I liked that 'noise'." — Julian Perez

Entrevista Exclusiva a Julián Pérez
An exclusive Spanish-language interview covering his introduction to electronic music in the early 1990s in Spain, his move to Ibiza in 2006, his invitation by Steve Lawler to join VIVa Music after Lawler heard Perez's track being played at Sankeys Ibiza and went to watch his set, and the founding of Fathers & Sons Productions in 2012. Perez described the label's philosophy — quality over commercial interest, choosing the "difficult path rather than relying only on luck or help." He spoke about the simultaneous coincidence of multiple opportunities in 2012: VIVa Music, the label launch, and breakthrough Ibiza gigs, describing it as "everything happening at the right moment."
"Todo se ha dado en el momento que tenía que surgir, eligiendo el camino difícil en lugar de contar sólo con la suerte o la ayuda. Es el trabajo constante lo que al final da resultados." — Julian Perez

Prefiero una batea a un disco duro
Argentine interview covering his label Fathers & Sons, the vinyl philosophy behind it, and his studio evolution since 2010. Perez described F&S as "a label that was born with a particular and clear idea, a personal sound that would not be affected by trends and would not be corrupted." He explained why he chose vinyl-only: "We were among those who decided vinyl had to come back to stay, and we bet on it. I wanted my music to come out on vinyl and few labels wanted to take that risk." He described highlights of his 2015 summer: two North America tours, Cocoon Formentera and ENTER. at Space Ibiza. The interview was conducted ahead of his Argentina tour (Córdoba, Mendoza, Flora & Fauna at the Buenos Aires Hipódromo).

I'm still working with my close friends who share this point"; (4) his sound — "you'll find a mix of house, techno, minimal, deep house, dub techno, and lately even ambient"; (5) his view on the current music scene — "the bigger obstacle to overcome now? Our own ego."

Fathers and Sons: A New Wax Trend
Sound Effect Magazine covered Fathers & Sons Productions as a new phenomenon in the vinyl market shortly after its 2012 launch. The article noted how the label's first release — a VA featuring Livio & Roby, S.A.M. and Julian Perez — had Zip, Ricardo Villalobos, Arpiar and Dyed Soundorom playing its tracks. The label's second release, with anonymous artists, was heard by Kerri Chandler. Julian Perez's remix of Kadoc's "The Night Train" was described as "a beautifully-constructed, textured epic which flowed organically from detailed, dubby soundscapes to no-nonsense dancefloor basslines — perhaps the most perfectly formed and effective track of the year."

The label had featured S.A.M., Livio & Roby, and Brian Harden. The 11-track album spans four sides of vinyl demonstrating "Perez's attention to detail and the evolution of his groove-led style." Tracklist: A1: Ain't That The Truth? / A2: Xless / A3: The Unspoken Thing / B1: Unusual Sense / B2: That Stuck TDK / B3: Interfluide / C1: Alog / C2: A War Melody Dreamer / D1: Sending Forth / D2: Recognition! / D3: Peace In The Darkness

Julian Perez — Solemnity (Review)
MEOKO writer Mahala Ashley reviewed Solemnity as a work communicating "Perez's signature sound and his more experimental side through a track list that represents total musical expression." The review described tracks like Ain't That The Truth, Interfluide and Peace In The Darkness as "glorious soundscapes of beautifully produced sound" and The Unspoken Thing, Unusual Sense and Alog as "upbeat driving tracks for the dancefloor." The label's ethos — "that we are in all this together, that we can learn and care from the fathers to the sons and vice versa" — was highlighted as rare in the electronic music landscape. Perez's own words closed the review: "This is not a goodbye but a see you soon! The music keeps on playing…"

XLR8R premiered audio snippets from Solemnity, praising "Perez's attention to detail and the evolution of his groove-led style." The album spans two 12-inch vinyls with 11 tracks covering atmospheric soundscapes, electro-influenced 909 drum patterns, club compositions and dub techno. Available via Subwax Bcn.
Resident Advisor reviewer Matt Unicomb reviewed the EP Now, After on Raum...musik (MUSIK096) — versatile material for DJs managing the final stages of evening events. The title track features "bright keys and dubby synths," the B-side "Clue Me In" focuses on massive bass. Perez noted as having established himself through Fathers & Sons Productions, producing sought-after vinyl commanding premium prices on the secondary market.
XLR8R premiered "Zapatac" — a Girada Unlimited rework of Velodrome's 1988 composition "Capitaz" — which became a favourite of Ricardo Villalobos and appeared in his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. The label's Momo Trosman described taking eight months and over 15 emails to secure the rights. The label drew inspiration from 1980s-90s Valencia club recordings and "La ruta del bakalao."
Alex Landzee followed Julian Perez during a weekend residency in Rotterdam, performing a 4-hour extended set at BAR Rotterdam (Void sound system). The feature profiled the Valencian-born producer as someone who carefully selects his professional engagements while maintaining active studio work and international bookings across Europe and North America. His two labels — Fathers and Sons and the newer Girada Unlimited — were highlighted as distinct projects exploring experimental approaches within deep house and techno.
XLR8R featured Julian Perez's exclusive mix ahead of his five-date US tour (New York, Miami, LA). The article noted an upcoming Cocoon Ibiza appearance and a Central and South America tour that August. Girada Unlimited's first release of 2018 — a deep four-tracker from D&S titled Sources of Light — was also highlighted as the first Girada release from an artist other than Perez.
Chris Nicholls described Julian Perez as "a master of emotive, functional dance music" whose "distinct sound is heard in an instant." The fifth Girada Unlimited release builds patiently over nine minutes with sharp acid sounds; B-sides include the after-hours "Mar De Fondo" and the energetic "Tense Capo."
Billy Wilkinson reviewed the collaboration between Julian Perez and Argentinian producer Franco Cinelli on Girada Unlimited. The title track features "a haunting, spine-chilling bassline" for peak-time moments. B-side "Entre M Y 3" carries "an incredibly eery, almost horror movie feel" through its "driving yet tormenting bassline."
Trommel Music reviewed Break-Even, the landmark tenth release on Girada Unlimited — a double 12" vinyl spanning spacey breakbeats, lush atmospherics and deep house. "Energy Fever" praised as "a sublime piece of dream house more than capable of entrancing a dancefloor." Tracks: Sweentro, Facts, Revelation, Eveileb, CSO All The Way, Drowned In Faith (Love & Light).

La evolución de la música electrónica
One of Julian Perez's earliest known press appearances. The Valencia-based DJ was featured in Day&Night Magazine discussing the evolution of electronic music — from the Minimal Techno boom of the early 1990s to the resurgence of original House sounds. He traced the genre's roots through Deep House, Detroit Techno, New Beat and EBM, and described the renewed influence of classic sounds: "I think the coming tendency is a perfect combination between Deep Sounds, Funky House, Tech House and Minimal Techno — these sounds can be played in parties like Circoloco or Monza, everything in a speed of around 126 beats per minute." He described the importance of swing in modern electronic music production.

Julian Perez: Primer Artista Español Fichado por Leftroom, Recycle y Two.Birds
A press note describing Julian Perez as "the first Spanish producer who — with no more than a year of producing electronic music — has signed contracts with Leftroom Records, Recycle and Two.Birds." The article traced his early releases: "Almost Love" on Leftroom's Left'd 03 (noted by Raresh, Robert Dietz, Alexi Delano); "Keep The Deal" on Two.Birds Mid Summer Digits compilation; "Nelipot EP" on Recycle Records (3 tracks + remix, with feedback from Someone Else, Alex Flatner, Marco Faraone, Sebastian Roya, among others); and "Lights Down EP" on Lowpitch Records (played by Loco Dice, Matthias Kaden and Livio & Roby). A full vinyl EP on Recycle Records — including the track "Royal Token" — was announced for 2011.
Vicious Magazine featured Julian Perez as "a young DJ born in Valencia who, through talent and momentum, has become the latest addition to Steve Lawler's VIVa MUSIC." The article described how Lawler invited him to participate in VIVa MUSIC's ADE showcase — after which Perez joined the VIVa MUSIC roster alongside Steve Lawler, Leon and Darius Syrossian, playing VIVa WARRIORS every Wednesday at Sankeys from July 4. Simultaneously, Perez was launching Fathers & Sons Productions: vinyl-only, 300 copies per EP, with the first disc selling out in just 10 days. Idoneidad Emprendedora
A full-length interview by Rosa Santos, published on the occasion of Fathers & Sons Productions' first anniversary. Perez spoke about growing up listening to MK, Todd Terry, Carl Craig, Chez Damier and Paul Johnson — records that shaped his identity as a DJ. He described his life philosophy as "entre vinilos" (living with vinyl): "I can't buy a record just because it comes out. At this moment I can tell you my life has been transformed by this." On the label: "Fathers & Sons was born with a particular and clear idea — a personal sound that would not be affected by trends and would not be corrupted." He named DC10 as the club where he'd spent the most time over the last few years, and Kazantip Festival in Ukraine as his favorite festival, describing it as a "discovery" he hoped would become a fixture. Upcoming at the time of publication: a track on a VIVa Family compilation with Franco Cinelli; tracks on a Savor Music sampler; a Recycle Records 12" with two deep/house tracks; and an EP for Fathers & Sons. His line-up for Off Sónar that year was confirmed.

Focus-On: Julian Perez & Fathers & Sons Productions
DJ Mag ES dedicated a full "Focus-On" feature to Julian Perez and his label Fathers & Sons Productions in their 50th issue. The piece examined the vinyl-only philosophy of the label in depth — the decision to limit releases to physical formats and small editions as a creative and curatorial statement — and traced Perez's journey from Valencia and Alicante to Ibiza and international touring. The feature highlighted his approach to quality over quantity, his independent stance outside the major agency system, and the label's growing catalog. By this point Fathers & Sons had hosted showcases in more than twelve countries in its first year alone, and every release had sold out within days of publication.

He described Romania as "un loc special pentru mine" (a special place for him), and spoke about his inspirations: "Inspiration comes from many forms — from the places I visit, the new people I meet, old or new music I listen to. When I think about my next track, my mind fills up without realising it, with all of these experiences." His best party/festival pick: BNP in Argentina ("regardless of location, the event always attracts the best crowd"). His definition of personal progress: "To try, every day, to compete with yourself and reach your goals. I do this surrounded by good people and being sincere with myself." Three tracks that influenced his style: Sensorama – Harz (Ladomat 2000, 1995); Swag – Version 4 (Jus' Trax, 1995); Underground Resistance – Adrenalin (Network Records, 1992).
